Powerful polymer seals in two ways
Water$ave Plug and Seep are super-absorbent polymers in a dry, powdered form.
When applied to the water surface the polymer works to seal the base and walls of your dam or pond in two ways.
Firstly, the particles begin to hydrate and expand on contact with water and descend to the bottom of the dam. The weight of the water (‘head pressure”) forces the particles into the cracks and voids, where the polymer particles continue to expand, creating an effective plug to stop the leaks.
Secondly, the negatively charged particles create a flocculating effect whereby soil particles suspended in the water bind together and sink to the bottom. This material also assists in stopping the leaks.
When applied correctly you can achieve a permanent seal in one application.
A simple DIY solution to a complex problem
The polymer is applied directly to the water surface by hand, or with the use of a small spreader.
If you know where the leaks are coming from, the polymer can be applied only to these areas. Otherwise it may be better to treat the entire water surface. Larger areas will require the use of a small boat as the polymers should not be broadcast more than 2m (7ft) by hand.
For best results the Water$ave Plug or Seep should be applied while the dam is actively leaking. Also, the treatment area should be free of weeds and debris as these stop the polymer particles finding their way into the leaks. The water should be at least 1m (3ft) deep. We recommend using the product only on fine days, with little wind and no rain.
When applied correctly, there should be a noticeable reduction in water loss over the first few days. The full effect of the treatment can take up to 14 days.
How much do I need?
Water$ave polymers should be applied evenly at a minimum rate of 100gm per square meter (4oz per 10 square feet). Aggressive leaks may require more product to achieve the best results. Both Plug and Seep come in a range of sizes:
12kg pail – treats up to 120m2
18kg pail – treats up to 180m2

Friendly to the environment
Water$ave Plug and Seep are non-toxic and not harmful to plant and animal life and are safe to handle without protective clothing. The polymers do become slippery when wet, so care should be taken. While there is no need to remove fish, it is recommended to keep livestock away during the application to ensure the polymers are relocated from the leaking areas. The polymers will bio-degrade over 8 - 10 years, during which time the natural build-up of silt and clay will have created a permanent natural seal.
The Water$ave polymers are an extremely effective DIY solution to seal your leaking dam.
A noticeable reduction in water loss should be evident within the first few days after application. It may take several weeks to see the full effects of the treatment.
While the application is quite simple, it is important to undertake some preparation to achieve the best results.
Firstly, if possible, you must identify where the dam is leaking. If there is water visible outside the dam wall you should treat the inner face of the wall that corresponds to the wet area. Allow a margin of error and treat a length of wall that extends past the wet area in all directions.
If there is no water visible outside the dam it is likely the leak is in the base. In this instance it is best to treat the entire water surface, unless you know the leak is in a specific area.
If you need help to find the leak Our Product Support Team can help
Once you have determined the part of the dam that needs to be treated (base or wall) it is important to remove as much vegetation as possible from that area. Grasses, weeds and leaf litter prevent the polymer particles from reaching the dam floor and creating an effective seal.
The product should be applied at a minimum rate of 100gm (approx. half a metric cup) per square meter. Apply the polymer powder directly to the water surface by hand, or with a small spreader. Do not broadcast the powder any further than 2m, and do the application on a calm day with little to no wind. Do not apply the polymers when it is raining.
It is useful to grid larger areas into several smaller sections. This helps ensure you get an even coverage of polymer to all areas.
Larger areas may require the use of a small boat to reach the middle of the dam. In this instance apply the product from the back of the boat, taking care to minimise water currents.
Aggressive leaks may require further treatments
