If you're dealing with a leaking dam or pond, it's essential to address the issue quickly to prevent further water loss. Water loss, especially in an agricultural setting, can lead to lost productivity costing you time & money. Here's a basic guide to help you assess the situation determine the severity of the problem, and take the necessary steps to fix it effectively:

1. Identify & Assess The Leak

  • Inspect the Dam: Look for visible cracks & holes around the dam including the wall & base. Even small cracks can expand over time, worsening the issue.
  • Wet Areas: Check for soft spots or wet areas on the wall & around the outside of the dam. This also includes checking for any visible flow of water.
  • Water Loss: Observe if the water level is visibly dropping. Is it decreasing more than expected due to evaporation? Generally, losing more than 150mm (6 inches) per week indicates a leak requiring attention.
  • Vegetation Growth: Excess plant growth, especially near the dam wall or base, can indicate leaks as moisture encourages plant development in typically dry areas.

2. Evaluate Size & Location

  • Leak Size: Minor leaks might not pose an immediate risk but still should be repaired to prevent worsening over time. Significant leaks can lead to substantial water loss, erosion, & in extreme cases, structural failure of the dam. How many leaks can also determine if a targeted or full repair is needed.
  • Leak Location: The location of the leak will affect the type of repair needed. Leaks on the wall will often result in wet areas forming outside the dam. Leaks in the base can be more challenging to detect & can result in unseen water loss underground.

3. Repairs

  • Water$ave Dam Sealers: Depending on your leak, Water$ave Plug or Water$ave Seep can seal your leaking dam. Water$ave is applied directly to the water surface by hand & drawn into the cracks & voids, sealing the leak. Learn More
